Castle Ruin Falkenstein - King Ludwigs Last Dream

A nice hike from Pfronten to the castle ruin on the Falkenstein, where King Ludwig II wanted to build his next fairytale castle. You can see from the ruin far into Vilstal. The view from the craggy rock of the castle ruin on Voralpenseen, Ammergebirge with Säuling, over Pfronten with Tannheimer mountains is simply extraordinarily fascinating!

There are several routes on the Falkenstein: from Pfronten on the driveway or on the south side over the trail at the height of the Breitenberg-Bahn in Pfronten Steinach, von Roßmoss, and Meillingen.

The high medieval Falkenstein ruin is the highest castle in Germany. You can also drive up by car, but a hike is more beautiful. The ascent is moderately exhausting and well feasible with children. From the castle, you can see Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Highly recommended is the short trip to the beautiful Mariengrotte.

If you are in Pfronten, you should definitely visit this attraction!
